eduroam Instructions

Most users can use the automatic configuration tool, which automatically configures your computer to use eduroam. This is the recommended way to configure eduroam.


Your eduroam username is your College email address. Any other variants of your username (including the short username) will not work.

Windows XP Instructions

Please note that once you have successfully connected to eduroam, Windows XP will not ask for your credentials again, unless your password changes. If you need your computer to forget your login information, please follow the instructions in the Microsoft knowledgebase article here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823731.



First, try using the Automatic Configuration Tool (RNCM eduroam Setup.exe), which automatically configures your computer to use eduroam. If this does not work for you for some reason, follow the instructions below.


  1. Open the network connections control panel. (Click Start, Control Panel,select Classic View (if not already selected), click Network Connections)
  2. Right click on your wireless network connection, and select Properties.
  3. Select the Wireless Networks tab.
  4. Ensure the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings box is ticked.
  5. In the list of preferred networks, if eduroam exists, select it and click Remove.
  6. Click the Add button (in the preferred networks section)
  7. In the Association tab, enter eduroam into the Network name (SSID) box.
  8. Change the Network Authentication drop down option to WPA2.
  9. Change the Data Encryption drop down option to AES (if you are using eduroam at a different organisation, you might need to pick WPA and TKIP as the previous two settings).
  10. Select the Authentication tab.
  11. In the EAP type drop down menu, select Protected EAP (PEAP)
  12. Untick the Authenticate as computer when computer information is available box.
  13. Untick the Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable box.
  14. Click on the Properties button.
  15. Tick the Validate server certificate box.
  16. Tick the Connect to these servers box.
  17. In to the Connect to these servers box, enter auth.rncm.ac.uk
  18. In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities list, tick only the box corresponding to AddTrust External CA Root
  19. Place a tick in the box Do not prompt user to authorize new servers or trusted certification authorities.
  20. In the Select Authentication Method drop down menu, select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP-v2).
  21. Tick the box Enable Fast Reconnect.
  22. Tick the box Enable Quarantine checks.
  23. Click on the Configure button.
  24. Untick the box Automatically use my windows logon name and password....
  25. Click Ok (EAP MSCHAP-v2 window).
  26. Click Ok (Protected EAP Properties window).
  27. Click Ok (Wireless Network Connection window).
  28. Your computer should now attempt to connect to the eduroam network – this may take 30 seconds or so. Lookout for a yellow popup bubble at the bottom of your screen saying Click here to select a certificate or other credentials for connection to the network eduroam, click on it when it appears.
  29. In the Enter Credentials window enter the following details:
  30. Username: your RNCM email address. For example Joe.Bloggs@rncm.ac.uk or Joe.Bloggs@student.rncm.ac.uk .
  31. Password: your normal password
  32. Logon Domain: leave blank

Click Ok – Your computer should then authenticate you to the network and you will be able to access the Internet. This may take up to 30 seconds.


Windows Vista and Windows 7 Instructions



First, try using the Automatic Configuration Tool (RNCM eduroam Setup.exe), which automatically configures your computer to use eduroam. If this does not work for you for some reason, follow the instructions below.

  1. Click Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet, Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Click Manage wireless networks.
  3. If eduroam is in the list of existing wireless networks, select it, right click on it and choose Remove network. Click OK if asked Do you want to proceed?
  4. Click Add.
  5. If asked, click Manually create a network profile in the How do you want to add a network window.
  6. Enter eduroam into the Network name box
  7. Change the Security type drop down option to WPA2-Enterprise
  8. Change the Encryption type drop down option to AES.
  9. Click Next
  10. Click Change connection settings
  11. Untick Connect to a more preferred network if available.
  12. Go to the Security tab
  13. Change the Network authentication method drop down option to Protected EAP (PEAP)
  14. Click Settings.
  15. Tick Validate server certificate.
  16. Tick Connect to these servers.
  17. In to the connect to these servers box, enter auth.rncm.ac.uk
  18. In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities list, tick only the box corresponding to AddTrust External CA Root
  19. Tick Do not prompt user to authorize new servers or trusted certification authorities.
  20. Change the Select Authentication Method drop down option to Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
  21. Tick Enable Fast Reconnect
  22. Tick Enable Network Access Protection (called Enable Quarantine Checks on Vista)
  23. Click Configure
  24. Untick Automatically use my Windows logon name and password and click OK.
  25. Click OK again, and again.
  26. Wait for a yellow bubble to appear which says Additional information is required to connect to eduroam. Click on this bubble (You may have to disconnect from any wireless networks you are currently connected to first).
  27. In the Enter Credentials window enter the following details:
  28. Username: your RNCM email address. For example Joe.Bloggs@rncm.ac.uk or Joe.Bloggs@student.rncm.ac.uk .
  29. Password: your normal password
  30. Logon Domain: leave blank
  31. Close any remaining open windows.
You computer should now connect you to the eduroam wireless signal. This may take up to 30 seconds.





Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)


  1. Click on the Wireless icon and then select Open Network Preferences.
  2. Select eduroam from the Network Name box.
  3. When prompted, enter your email address,eg. Joe.Bloggs@rncm.ac.uk or Joe.Bloggs@student.rncm.ac.uk .
  4. Enter your password, then click OK
  5. In the Verify Certificate window, click Show Certificate. Make sure that the certificate shows auth.rncm.ac.uk and that it says This certificate is valid. Then click Continue.
  6. If prompted, enter your Mac’s administrator password then click OK.
  7. Your computer should now connect to eduroam. “Authenticated via PEAP (MSCHAPv2)” will be displayed in the middle of the window. You can close the settings window.

In the future your Mac should automatically connect to eduroam whenever it is in an eduroam wireless area.


iPhone, iPad and iPod



  1. Download the Apple settings for eduroam. You can do this without authenticating, when you connect to the RNCM-General network.
  2. Select Install.
  3. Select Install Now.
  4. Enter your RNCM email address. For example Joe.Bloggs@rncm.ac.uk or Joe.Bloggs@student.rncm.ac.uk . Then press Next.
  5. Enter your normal password, then press Next.
  6. Press Done.
  7. eduroam is now set up on your device. To connect to it, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and select eduroam.






Android Instructions

First, you must ensure ‘Secure credential storage’ is enabled:

  1. Open Settings, then Security
  2. Ensure Secure credential storage is enabled (ticked). You may have to choose set password first (set it to something you will remember).
  3. If you can’t remember an existing credential storage password, you can do Settings, Security, Clear storage to clear the password, and then choose set password to set it again.
Then...
  1. Go to the main menu.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Choose Wireless & Networks.
  4. Choose Wi-Fi settings.
  5. Scroll to the bottom and choose Add Wi-Fi network.
  6. Enter the Network SSID as eduroam. This is case sensitive.
  7. Set Security to WPA-EAP or 802.1x Enterprise.
  8. Set EAP Type to PEAP.
  9. Set Phase 2 Authentication to MSCHAPV2.
  10. Leave Client Certificate blank (This setting might not be present on all devices).
  11. Set Identity to your RNCM email address, eg Joe.Bloggs@rncm.ac.uk or Joe.Bloggs@student.rncm.ac.uk .
  12. Set Wireless password to your normal RNCM password.
  13. Click Save.

Android should now connect automatically to eduroam.
